Mr. Sharp stated that it would be better not to leave the matter in the hands of future administrations, and Mr. Holyoak agreed that confidence in the University would not be restored unless there was a good endowment fund

behind them.

His Excellency then asked members whether they agreed to the proposal. It was most undesirable that there should be any open discussion when the matter came before Council. Such discussion would be most injurious to the interests of the University as reflecting on the actions of the University Authorities in the past. That was of course why the preliminary report of the Commission had not been

published.

Mr. Lau Chu Pak on being asked by His Excellency stated that he did not think the Chinese public would be likely to subscribe much at present but they might come forward when the present political disturbances were over.

Mr. Lowe enquired whether the Manager of the Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation had been on the Council in the past and whether if there had been no authority from the Council for the overdraft at the bank it might not be possible to suggest to the bank that they might grant a donation approximating to the overdraft.

Members stated that they agreed with the proposal

of Government and the meeting terminated.
